The Citizens Score for Good Governance (SCORE) congratulates the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun on the old move of launching Police Go Green Initiative at COP 28 in United Arab Emirates. The 2023 event organized by United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, more commonly known as COP23, was the 28th United Nations Cimate Change Conference held from 30 November to 12 December at Expo City, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The President of SCORE, Simon Tuleh commended the IGP on the bold initiative of taking the lead in the fight against climate change with the commitment to reducing carbon emission in the operations of the police and embracing more eco-friendly practice in its operations.
Mr Tuleh lauded the Nigerian police emission reduction programme as a sustainable development programme that will enhance the efforts of deploying green initiative solutions to support Nigeria’s transition to a low carbon emission programme and also boost the Force’s operational efficiency and capacity to fight crime and maintain law and order in Nigeria. The expressed that this is a timely initiative that is coming at a time when the president of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made commitment to provide enabling environment for green innovations and facilitate Nigeria’s goal of achieving net-zero emission.
The initiative has garnered positive attention from various stakeholders, including environmental organizations, international bodies, and the general public. It is seen as a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and environmentally responsible police force. By taking proactive steps towards environmental sustainability, Nigeria sets an example for other countries in Africa and beyond. One of the key aspects of this initiative is the adoption of renewable energy sources. The Nigerian police force is setting the stage to transition from traditional energy sources to solar power and other renewable energy alternatives. This will not only help reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also lead to cost savings in the long run. In addition, the initiative aims to promote eco-friendly transportation methods within the police force. This includes transition to Electric vehicles and Gas Conversion Vehicles. By doing so, the initiative seeks to reduce fuel consumption and air pollution while promoting a healthier lifestyle among police personnel.
Mr Tuleh expressed that SCORE has been at the forefront of promoting initiatives that protect Nigerians citizens and their well being, and climate change as a growing concern for all. He appealed to stakeholders from the federal to state governments to join hands with the police in combating the threat of climate change to our national development
