Nigeria is Africa’s most populated country with a female population that counts to about 60% of the total population yet there has been a disproportionate share of this population in governance. But the appointment of Dr Betta Edu as the Honorable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation portends a new shift from the old norm. More than the fact that she is female, Dr Betta is the youngest minister appointed by president Tinubu.
Her stint races back to her remarkable achievements as national women leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former commissioner of health, Cross River State.
Dr Betta has been known for her compassionate disposition and commitment to empowering the poor and downtrodden. The 37 years old graduate of Medicine from University of Calabar with professional certification from internationally renowned academic institutions seeks to galvanize critical stakeholders within and outside Nigeria in tackling the growing poverty index of the country.
Many observers have lauded the choice of president Tinubu as they are confident that very few Nigerians holds the pedigree that Dr Betta possesses for the job.
