One does not need to be a sports lover to know coaching is no mere job be it for a man or a woman. Coaching Nigeria’s female basketball team is not a job many people will jostle to get, very few politicians would even give it a thought, unlike football where you have overwhelming interests and lobbyists cashing in. Not many people thought the girls would go any far, except for Rena Wakama.
Wakama was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on April 11, 1992. Johnson Wakama and Rosana Oba, her parents, are natives of Okrika in Rivers State. She studied at the Western Carolina University, where she graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor’s degree in therapeutic recreation. She served four years on the institution’s women’s basketball team, the “Catamounts.”
She did not only lead the Nigerian female team to win a fourth championship but also made history as the first female coach to win the competition since it began in 1966.
