Miss Rukayat Shiu who vied under the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged winner in the contest to represent Owode/Onire Constituency, Asa Local Government in the Kwara State, House of the Assembly during the 18 March 2023 general elections. She was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after polling7,512 votes to defeat the top contender from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who got 6,957 votes. Shiu is not only set to become one of Nigeria’s youngest lawmakers, born in 1996, but also one of youth whose stories of ground breaking achievements have only begun. The emergence of this young Muslim lawmaker in the state that will be dominated by individuals twice her age may pose one of the tests that could form her political experience. But her victory rekindles the hope of possibilities for not only the female Muslim in the country but every young boy or girl out there that Nigeria’s political trajectory heads where light abounds.
